Things To Do in Portland

Powell's City of Books
For a laid back evening with over one million books in a building that engulfs an entire city block, try Powell's City of Books. Popular with locals and tourists alike, you can likely find just about any used, new, or out of print piece of literature in this trendy bookstore. With daily kids' story times, as well as famous and local authors and speakers, the whole family will be happy meandering through the different levels of this classic bookstore.

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry
On a rainy afternoon, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is perfect for the entire family. This museum is hands-on and kid friendly with over 219,000 square feet of indoor entertainment. Watch a movie on the large screen at the OMNIMAX Dome Theater, hop over to the planetarium, or walk through an actual submarine. The kids, big and small, won't want to leave!

Outdoor Activities
If the outdoors is more your scene, take advantage of Portland's great weather and amazing views by hiking and biking in the nearby Columbia County or the Columbia River Gorge. Renting a kayak in the scenic Scappoose Bay is another option. There is also golfing, camping and white water rafting available for the more adventurous traveler. If you want to take it easy, the drive through this area is breathtaking, with winding roads that twist around America's second largest river.

International Test Rose Garden
Another outdoor venue is the International Test Rose Garden. Known as the Rose State, Portland is home to over 7,000 species of roses and has rightly earned the nickname City of Roses. Cultivars, or newly cultivated plants, are sent here to be tested for scent, color and other characteristics. Although Portland has many other rose gardens, this is by far the most popular.

The Grotto
The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, a Catholic temple also known as "The Grotto", is one of Portland's most popular attractions. Spanning over 62 acres, the site receives over 175,000 visitors each year from around the world. It is a natural monument to art in the middle of the woods with a Pieta imitation etched into the bottom of a cliff that looms 110 feet in the air. In addition to botanical gardens, this visit also offers a view of Mount St. Helens and the Cascade Mountain Range.
