Getting Around Portland

Cycling is an incredibly popular way to get around in the environmentally friendly city of Portland. There are several major streets that were designed with bikers in mind, and most roads will have a clearly designated bike lane with diagonal stripes. Anyone unsure of whether the street is safe for bikers should look for green road signs with the words Bike Route clearly visible. Free maps of the various biking routes throughout the city are also readily available from most tourism offices in Portland.

Buses are operated by the MAX transport system in Portland and are very easy to navigate. However, they are typically not a great option during heavy traffic periods. Most residents use the bus system to get to the neighboring suburbs of Portland or to travel late at night when traffic is minimal or nonexistent.

Walking around Portland is by far the best way to get a sense of the city, find many of the less touristy attractions, and experience a more authentic daily life in the area. Most intersections have crosswalks or lights for pedestrians to cross easily, and there are free maps available for the most popular walking routes through Portland.

Most residents in Portland get by without ever needing a car of their own, so most travelers can do the same. Traffic can be bad at certain times of day in the city, and parking is difficult. However, having a car can be handy when trying to get out of the city and into the neighboring suburbs where public transport is less accessible.

The Portland Streetcar just has one line, but it runs along a major road with many of the biggest attractions in the entire city along it. The 20-minute journey by streetcar in either direction will pass Northwest Portland, Riverplace, Portland State University, South Waterfront, and the Pearl District. The streetcar typically runs every 15 minutes around the clock every day.

Light Rail
Light rail is the most popular form of transport in Portland, Oregon. The main lines are color coded as green, yellow, blue, and red, and maps make it easy to find which destinations are on which lines. The light rail is affordable and convenient, and visitors can purchase unlimited transport passes that make it simpler than ever to get around while visiting Portland.
